Missing

Many missing people are on my mind this week.

There was an incident up at Lake of the Woods several weeks ago…three teenage boys on a fishing trip drowned…the third boy has not been found.  They want to find his body before the ice sets in…but they are not hopeful. ( Your older child takes off happy as a lark on a fishing trip with friends.)

There was a 18 year old girl from Starbuck that was missing  earlier this week… she was found in a cornfield dead. (Your College Student disappears.)

Dennis Bank’s granddaughter is missing up in Bemidji, I heard Dog the Bounty Hunter was called in to help with the search. ( Your older daughter is missing.)

A person of interest in being questioned in the October 22, 1989 disappearance of Jacob Wetterling.  Twenty six years those parents have been waiting for some news.  I cannot begin to understand the depth of their sorrow for all these years.  ( Your son was abducted while riding his bike with two other young boys near your home.)

Something else is missing.

Parents must be missing from the schools. Why in the world do we need Police Officers in the schools to handle “situations” with our children.  Call the parents, have the kid expelled or require one parent to attend school with the child….bet that ruling would get some parents attention.

What am I missing?

I guess I am ready for a news break again…too depressing.

Cross that belongs somewhere

I hear you about the need for a news fast every once in awhile. I can see why all those missing children would depress you. Now you've done it: I'm depressed too. Not really, but I think I'm almost ready for a news fast, too.

I feel the say way....great idea about calling parents to come pick up their "child". Our schools, here in Texas big cities, also have their own police departments....can you imagine that? Where has discipline gone?

It is sad ! I have a friend who has been missing for 25 years in the month of August it is a cold case still open as they have never found his body he went missing from his farm when he was 14 .To this day I still think about him and wonder what happened and why ? ! I hope the families get some closer soon !

It is sad, very sad, and scary. A missing child or family member would be heartbreaking. I turn the TV off as soon as Poppy leaves for work. Mornings that I forget, it hits me after a while and I think, no wonder I'm feeling depressed, all these sad stories being told over and over.

I agree that the family should be responsible for the raising and discipline of their children- but that has become almost a lost art. Too many parents rely on schools and government programs to do what they are in duty bound, as a parent, to do.
It is very sad that evil people prey on children, and I know the heartbreak of losing a family member to a tragic accident.

Give your loved ones a hug. Depressing news everywhere. The latest here is the whale watching boat that was hit by a rogue wave and overturned. Five dead, and one body still not found. So sad.

Things do need to change in our schools, but will they? And so sad about the children.
I know where our sons are at rest but still think of them often. To not know would be unbearable.

These are issues where all of us have to be involved. I walk every night about 8:00 PM. I never meet anybody. What happens is the bad guys have free range to do what they want and nobody is there to check them. All of us have to get off our butts and be there.

Sad isn't it? I don't know how the Wetterlings do it. Last year the Star Tribune wrote an article stating that there were 174 unsolved cases of missing persons in Minnesota, the oldest going back to 1963. Not all were children, but still missing loved ones. About the schools . . . GN and I had a discussion about the apathy her teachers exhibit everyday . . . not all of them but more than half in her four years there. Not the cause of violence, but not a message of encouragement or respect either.

It would horrible to be in the situation where a loved one has gone missing. I'm grateful it has never happened to a family member or friend.

My daughter quit teaching a few years ago, and part was due to the involvement of parents. When I was young, if there was an issue at school, my mom always wanted to know what I'd done wrong. Too many parents today assume little Suzie (or Johnny) would never do anything to require discipline or removal from the school....to do so would be an infringement of their rights. Until parents hold their kids are accountable for their behaviour we need some authority in the school. They are there not only to keep the kids safe, but the teachers as well. It is truly a sad commentary.

Yikes! That was a depressing read. You also made those tragedies hit home even if it was not someone we know.
Parents are missing in school. but in the Texas case, the girl's mother had recently died and she was in foster care. There was a whole lot of mishandling in that case.

:( it has been a sad week in the news.... and that cross is missing its' home. When Mom and I did some cleaning at the cemetery that cross was just lying there propped up against the tree - was it moved and not put back? Wonder where it belongs and to whom.

My kids were young when Jacob Wetterling was abducted and it was such a scary thing. For his parents' sake, it would be wonderful if they could have some closure. I have a hard time watching the news and I don't keep up with it much because it's too depressing because there is nothing I can do about all the sad situations. The best news today is, we get an extra hour of sleep!

It does seem like there's a lot more sad and/or terrible stories in the news and I'm another one who gets to the point of just turning off the TV. For the families involved though there is no respite.

That type of news is the worst. I have to lay off of the news every once in awhile because it is too depressing. The weather channel is pretty safe so I watch that plus I like weather. I always feel for those left behind. It would be very difficult to go on after something horrific like that.

It is getting to be too much to handle. We have a county in Iowa that is proud of having so many unregulated gravel intersections. When three brothers all die in one uncontrolled intersection, and it isn't their fault one would think they would have to rethink that policy. Our Johnny Gosch remains missing yet today. He went missing around the same time as Wetterling. Some evidence a few years back suggested that men who play on the wrong team, took him away while he was delivering newspapers. The rest is unknown. His mother wants to believe he is living in California with a bad crowd yet today.
